This short work was composed by two close friends, Yunnan’s poet of the tea mountains Lei Pingyang and Yunhaizhidian Classical Teahouse founder Chen Jian. It illuminates tea culture from distant origins in ancient primary forests to the sublime aesthetics of finely crafted tea inspiring the egress of contemporary artisans into remote mountains in search of the source. A syncretism of Daoist, Confucian, and Buddhist ideas subtly pervades the poem, expressing a ‘unity of the three teachings’ (
sanjiao heyi). While the poem consists of barely two dozen lines, it eloquently conveys the longue durée of tea culture.

Chazhe

In the midst of the forest, a taste of bitter to survive the world
a Chan verse to empty this human heart
, nourishing both body and spirit.
Pu’er was born in remoteness, tracks hidden in Dian soil,
true origin silent and undifferentiated, pure fragrance the store of years.

Receiving dao from mountain and stream
human and spirit mutually imbibe, mountain hun and water po.

Silver births ten thousand mountains, the Lancang flows unrestrained
while in remote mountains and secluded valleys, obscurely
in the nameless rainforest, seedlings become ancient trees.

Three thousand year chadao,
belonging to the world, the free-spirited heart of tea,
existing upright and honest, the ‘peak of poetic perfection’
Bodhi within and without, all possess highest freedom.

Recollecting the first ones to harvest the mountains,
numerous indigenes accompanied by southern
immigrants of Xiang, Guang, Gan, and Shu
binding grasses for huts

in the mists of remote wilderness, establishing bloodlines
Spring and Autumn, continually sowing the subtle scent
out of formlessness transforming perilous bird paths
gathering all peoples, from antiquity to the present, to establish
and nurture tea culture, footprints of the entire world’s tea history.

Entering the mountains today, remote and always flourishing
ancient trees as before, tender buds of superb quality
another yun, qi, xiang, pin or yin
a thousand flavors return to one
cherishing, one may know.
